80年代初期海獅樂隊是支來自英國的前衛搖滾樂隊，其初期樂風深受另一老牌前衛樂隊Genesis的影響，原主唱Derek Dick(好糟的名字，所以大多樂迷稱他Fish)的個人風格決定了其前期音樂的走向，因此在他單飛時曾讓歌迷對樂隊的未來感到無望，但是繼任的Steve Hogarth的歌唱技巧遠勝Fish，而且樂隊擺脫了舊有的風格，反而得以讓隊員們各展所長，對樂隊長期發展似乎更有利。現在把Marillion分為原來的Fish時期和後來的H時期來介紹。

   從他們和EMI簽約後，他們的第一("Script For A Jester's Tear")和第二張("Fugazi")專輯展現了Genesis接班人的氣勢，有繁複的編曲和大量用典的歌詞，這正對了某些歌迷的胃口，卻受到樂評的輕視。Fish經常畫個大花臉，近乎瘋狂且耽溺地以戲劇化表演，這有點像是Genesis全盛時期Peter Gabriel的作風。一直到了第三張專輯"Misplaced Childhood"('85)，他們才算是真正的成功，其中的"Kayleigh"及"Lavender"兩首甜蜜且直入人心的情歌受到了極大的歡迎，甚至在全英流行榜上得到亞軍，但是這竟也間接造成Fish的離開。步上許多搖滾歌手的後塵，Fish開始陷入酒與毒品的問題中，甚至影響到第四張專輯"Clutching at Straws"('87)的表現，而且其它隊員除了不喜歡被當成流行歌手，也受不了Fish自以為代表樂隊的態度，終於在第五張專輯錄製過程中，Fish離開了Marillion。

    媒體馬上認為Marillion是完了，因為Fish幾乎是Marillion的招牌，直到他們找到新的主唱Steve Hogarth。他的聲音對比於狂暴、高亢的Fish，是感性內斂得多，而且充滿敘事性，憑良心說，在唱功上Hogarth是遠遠超過了Fish。終於Marillion以Hogarth為中心再度推出了第五張studio album--"Season's End"(90')，掃除了大部分歌迷的疑惑，不過說也奇怪，即使音樂上有所長進，終究無法突破"Misplaced Childhood"的成績，之後的"Holidays in Eden"(91')還是不如預期，因此他們停下了腳步，希望再度回到巔峰。     

Marillion樂隊直到'94年，他們帶著一張新的概念專輯回來，在這張長達七十多分鐘的"Brave"中，他們結合了Jazz, folk, ambient, 及rock各種音樂型式的技法，表現出一個小女孩的逃家經歷，Hogarth在其中也有了點Fish般的耽溺，因為還得演出其中的每個角色，而故事本身又帶著些意識流的色彩。雖然它注定得不到市場上太大的成功，但是樂迷和樂評倒是滿足了這方面的缺憾，至少也贏得了我的衷心支持。更令我感到佩服的，他們在"Made Again"這張現場實況('96)中演出了整張"Brave"的內容，充分證明他們的實力的確不同凡響。

    在確定了他們的音樂模式之後，他們持續推出"Afraid of Sunlight"('95)和"This Strange Engine"('97)，最近他們又推出了"Marillion.com"這張新專輯，在新的千禧年，仍舊希望繼續聽見這群真正的音樂人堅持自我風格的作品。

    "Misplaced Childhood"以及"Brave"代表著Marillion在兩個時期的巔峰。但"A Singles Collection1982-1992"是一張可以同時聽見兩個時期的代表作品不錯的精選輯。
